What Big Ups asks Slack for

Slack will show you this list on its own permission screen. Here it is first, in our words, with the reason for each one.

Post in the channel you choose

Big Ups posts each big up in one public channel you pick, and joins that channel so it can. It also sends the person being thanked a direct message, so a big up does not depend on them reading the channel that day.

See the names of your public channels

So you can pick that channel from a list instead of typing it exactly. This is the list of channels, not what is said in them.

Add the /bigup command

This is the whole of what makes /bigup exist in a workspace. Slack grants it here or not at all.

Who is in your workspace, and their email addresses

Names, profile photos and email addresses. That is your roster, and the email address is what matches a person in Slack to the same person on the web.

Your workspace's name and address

So your organization arrives named after your workspace, instead of asking you to type in something you have already told Slack.

The team and manager custom profile fields

Custom profile fields are where a workspace records someone's department and who they report to, usually filled in by an HR sync. Where they are there, your analytics can show recognition by team. Where they are not, nothing changes and nothing breaks.

Your name and email address when you sign in with Slack

The one permission that is about you rather than your workspace. It is what signing in with Slack signs in as.

What is not on the list is worth saying as well. Big Ups asks for no access to your message history, none to your private channels, and none to your files. It cannot post as you, and it cannot see a conversation it has not been invited into.
